My name is Derrick Wafula Mukanda. I am from Bungoma County in western Kenya. I hold a Bachelor of Economics degree from Karatina University. Before joining the corporate world, I felt a strong calling to serve in God’s ministry. This led me to join the iServe Africa apprenticeship program as a first-year apprentice.
I am placed at Embrace A Street Child in Ruiru, Kiambu County. During the day, I lead morning devotions for street boys, teach academic lessons, resolve conflicts, report on rehabilitation progress, and lead sports, games, and crafts. Additionally, I teach Bible lessons. At night, I ensure all boys have had supper and share the gospel with them before they sleep. I also wake up early to share the gospel before they start their morning chores.
This placement has provided numerous experiences and highlights. I have gained valuable experience resolving brutal conflicts, especially among the boys. I have developed new teaching methods and now have substantial experience in teaching children. Constantly teaching morning devotions and Bible lessons has deepened my understanding of the scriptures. I have grown in one-on-one teaching and disciplining several boys personally.
The ministry training in April at iServe Africa was profoundly impactful. The theme, “The Mission of God,” focused on the book of Acts and significantly influenced my perspective. Through this training, I learned that the coming of the Holy Spirit does not change how God speaks; He still speaks through His word. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is the ministry of the word. I also realized that I am a great sinner, but Jesus is a greater Savior. The true gospel is a ministry of the word and prayer. We must decide to kill sin, or it will kill us, as it did to Ananias and Sapphira. Additionally, I learned that the Great Commission is not just about geography; it also involves culture, races, and classes.
I plan to pursue long-term ministry. I pray that God helps me plan and prepare well for this future endeavor. I am committed to serving in His mission and making a lasting impact. I am grateful for the experiences and training that have shaped my journey so far, and I look forward to continuing to grow and serve in God’s ministry.
