My name is Wedy Makena, a sinner saved by faith alone. My journey as a believer began in 2016 during a weekend challenge at my school, where I became a born-again Christian. Before that, I was just a good girl committed to religious work. Through this journey, I have understood that salvation comes not through my deeds or efforts but through faith in Jesus Christ. This realization has been a cornerstone in my spiritual growth, guiding me through moments of doubt and strengthening my relationship with God. My belief in salvation by faith alone defines who I am. It shapes my worldview, guides my decisions, and gives me hope for the future. I am committed to sharing this faith and growing spiritually in this life journey.

I joined the iServe Africa Apprenticeship program in January 2024, where I was placed in the headquarters office in Kikuyu. My roles have been diverse here, from performing administrative duties to serving as a librarian. As an admin, my roles involve planning for interviews: ensuring interview materials are ready, preparing interview schedules for both interviewees and interviewers, follow-ups, and supporting my fellow apprentices. I ensure that administrative tasks are effectively handled, from filing apprentices’ documents to planning and preparing physical training sessions. These responsibilities have allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the organization’s mission while growing personally and spiritually.

One of the major highlights of my role has been in recruitment and interviewing potential candidates. This process has deepened my appreciation for the diversity of backgrounds and experiences. In addition to my administrative work, I have had the opportunity to engage in mentorship, particularly with three teenage girls who completed high school last year. Walking alongside them in their faith journeys and providing guidance has been humbling and incredibly rewarding. These interactions continued to remind me of the transforming power of the Gospel and the importance of nurturing and mentoring the next generation of believers.

The physical and online training from iServe Africa has been instrumental in shaping my understanding of our Gospel. Learning about Christ’s sacrifice and its implications for our work has strengthened my commitment to serving others and spreading His message of love and redemption to all, even those who may not seem to need to hear this message. The teachings have also reminded me of how sinful I am and that the Gospel is the solution.

My experience has been unique, especially since one of my expectations when joining the ministry was to receive mentorship in my faith journey. The past six months have been a time of being equipped rather than equipping, a period of growth, learning, and service. I am eager to continue growing in my roles, deepening relationships within our ministry community (both apprentices and our bigger brothers and sisters, the staff), and enhancing my relationship with God. I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped me and look forward to continuing this journey with renewed enthusiasm and dedication. I am also thankful for the opportunity to serve and the support and encouragement I have received thus far.
