“This is a timely and strategic initiative for missions in the 21st century that demonstrates the seriousness with which Africa is responding to God's call of involvement in global mission.” Peter Oyugi, Senior Leader, Elmfield Church, UK and former Director of Students Ministry- FOCUS Kenya,

Background

iServe Africa began in 2007 after Harrison spent two years in the UK as a ministry apprentice in Reading and Sussex. Through observation of the UK church landscape,  training and the personal mentoring he received, he became strongly convinced that the African church is in great need of gospel workers. After prayer and wide consultations with leaders both in Kenya and in the UK, the idea solidified and he felt strongly that an apprenticeship programme would be one answer to raising a generation of  gospel workers who will faithfully teach the scriptures and encourage Christians to live out their faith in the African context.

The experience as an apprentice at was an eye opener to the many opportunities available for training in ministry. It perfectly served as a ground for testing the waters of christian ministry. During his time in the UK, Harrison attended The Sussex Coast Ministry Training Course (SCMTC) and Philip Project training at Cornhill in London,  He learnt a lot from these courses and imagined how resourceful they would be in Africa.

Inspired by the apprenticeship models in the UK, Harrison envisaged a programme that would give young graduates opportunities of involvement in Christian ministry, helping them to explore the needs and opportunities available in gospel ministry, whether gospel ministry is for them and also a programme that would support the ministry of a local church. The idea of iServe Africa was born and established as a structure in which young people in Africa can give their time to serve the Church and the community for their own good and to the Glory of God.

iServe Africa currently operates under the cover of Sheepfold Ministries and is headquartered in South C, Nairobi.

How does the Programme Work?

We recruit the volunteers from among potential college graduates drawn from a wide variety of cultural, denominational and academic backgrounds. We offer them training in Biblical and practical church ministry in collaboration with key bible colleges and other like minded Christian organizations.

Finally, we place them in the local churches in a cross cultural setting where they spend up to one year working for the church under an experienced gospel minister who becomes their supervisor. The supervisor then offers apprenticeship to the volunteer throughout the year while engaging him/her in various ministry duties.

What will I get?
An amazing opportunity to have new experiences, exposure local church ministry and a chance to explore the needs and opportunities available –in gospel ministry all with a view to grow in your commitment to God and your future involvement in gospel ministry..
MTA will ensure that all volunteers get food, accommodation and a small stipend. We will provide ongoing training and support throughout your year as an apprentice.

Who can be involved?
Any Christian above the age of 21 with a passion for Christian /community work. We are especially targeting college/university graduates wishing to give up a year before employment/further training. Please contact us for an application pack or download the form here

 iServe Africa offers the following:

1. Experience
Most young people are happy to offer up to a year out doing something for the church or community. However, they are at a critical transition phase in their lives and hence in need of guidance as they make choices. iServe Africa will seek to give them guidance, training and experience in many aspects of Christian ministry. This experience will be valuable development in their chosen career path.

2. Exposure
Many young people have not lived or worked outside their familiar territories. Most of their cross cultural skills and inter personal skills need developing. iServe Africa will seek to offer opportunities for fresh graduates to live and work cross culturally. Through such exposure, we hope stereotypes will be broken, the gospel promoted and the young people will be able to look at the world through the loving eyes of Jesus and see themselves as God's agents of transformation in the societies they are sent to.

3. Exploration
iServe Africa will seek to give the young people opportunities to explore their future in Gospel ministry. During the course of the placement we will seek to creatively help them to listen to God's leading upon their lives. We will seek to explore available opportunities of further involvement in Gospel ministry through further theological training, involvement in their local church as small group leaders, youth workers, children's workers, community workers etc.
